Reptiles and Amphibians 1

Here are a few of the resident herps in the Allegheny Valley region. More to come this summer. Reptiles and amphibians are my favorite critters.

Wehrle's Salamander (Plethodon wehrlei)
This lungless salamander lived in a woody ravine near Cuba, NY.

Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus)

A juvenile, this aquatic salamander lived in a shallow pool in Dodge Creek, near West Clarksville, NY.

Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens)

I found this frog lurking about a drainage ditch in Olean, NY, with some good camouflage.

Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)

Found in the gorge at Zoar Valley (I put it on a branch to get a closer look) this Eastern Garter Snake (T. s. sirtalis) was a poser.

Dusky Salamander (Desmognathus fuscus)

This is a Northern Dusky (D. f. fuscus) found in a hemlock stand in a small hollow near West Clarksville, NY.
